Featuring, J.D.A Wiseman, author of Port Vintages, The Chronicle of Vintage Ports, from the Beginning (Second Edition)

‘My first taste of Port was in October 1987 at matriculation dinner, Queens’ College Cambridge’ declares Julian Wiseman. ‘Immediately I knew this was the wine for me, but was too young and unwise to note what it was. Later I learnt that it might have been a 1970, a Vintage which is still drinking beautifully – but its era will soon end. In 2009 I persuaded the authorities to end that ban, and now most vintages are also offered in proper-size bottles: 300cl (double-magnum) and 600cl (Imperial).’ In March 2016 the Confraria do Vinho do Porto admitted Julian ‘as an Honorary Confrade with the rank of Cavaleiro, Knight.’

“What matters, in the end, is that we value wine as one of the most beautiful of human artifacts, and one whose being reflects, with shocking fidelity, the unconformities and irregularities of our earthly home.”

If you were to choose only one dish from Burgundy, what would it be?

Raymond Blake takes us on a gastronomic adventure to his favourite fine dining restaurants in Burgundy. He shares his notes on Burgundian wine and food in several corners of the region.

“Words struggle to do it justice for, while the primary flavours are easily noted, it is the amalgam of sub-flavours, scents and textures that beguiles the diner, prompting eye-rolling delight. And to drink? A regular choice is Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey’s Saint-Aubin.”

@andrewcjefford is, in the words of winemaker Randall Grahm, ‘the most thoughtful person we have writing about wine’.

Discover why in this selection from Jefford’s work, celebrating the limitless beauty of wine difference. This book anatomizes the pleasure that awaits every drinker while simultaneously furnishing a philosophy of wine – one founded on astonishment, and drawing on personal discovery rather than hierarchy and mastery. There is no other wine writing like this.

’It’s not wine writing. It’s writing.’ @jaymcinerney
