Steven Spurrier’s last international journey had

Steven Spurrier’s last international journey had taken him to Uruguay, a small wine country tucked between Argentina and Brazil. On the return he wrote about his discoveries on Vinosity in 2020. To read his articles follow the links in our bio.

Two years after his journey I had a chance to visit @bodegagarzon, a winery that put Uruguay on the international wine map.

Situated in the rolling hills of Maldonado, 18 km from the coast, Bodega Garzon has been built with sustainability and long-term vision in mind. The temperate climate, the light Atlantic breeze and the well-drained granite soil make this part of Uruguay well-suited to winemaking. Since the beginning, the Garzon team has been experimenting with a wide range of grape varieties in small parcels in the vineyard, from Albarino through Pinot Noir to Tannat. Its growing portfolio has been exported to many countries but it is also strong in the local market. And Garzon makes not only delicious wines but olive oils too!

Despite being a young winery - established 16 years ago and its first vintage was 2010 - it has already achieved a great international success. In 2020 Garzon was chosen as the New World Winery of the Year.

As our host Franco Ilari says ‘the best is still ahead of us’. I look foward to seeing where the next 16 years will take the winery.
