‘Elizabeth Hecker’s book is a beautiful and passionate portrait of Priorat and of those who live and work there. We see with her eyes through her haunting, honest photographs. We hear the voices she has heard, the stories she has been told. We learn something of the history of this place over the centuries of human habitation, and the millennia during which its stones and slopes came into being.’
Andrew Jefford

‘Despite the physical beauty of the book, and the compelling stories that the photos tell, this is not a coffee-table book. It is detailed, practical, packed with facts from years of research and walking the vineyards and villages. Ethos Priorat is, quite frankly, a work of art. Hecker’s years of experience culminate in a book that you want to breathe in, slowly, meditatively, deeply. Her immersion in Priorat saturates every page. It’s a paean to a region without obeisance or cliché. It’s a prayer. It’s timeless.’
Tamlyn Currin, JancisRobinson.com

‘There’s a new, very good, and recommended resource for fans of Priorat: a very detailed book from writer and photographer Elizabeth Hecker, who took 15 years to photograph and research the zones, the seasons, the landscapes and people from Priorat to create her beautiful book.’ Luis Guitérrez, Wine Advocate

‘Elizabeth’s prose is charming, sometimes earnest, grounded in facts and contexts, and when she’s writing about families, full of love. The book as a whole is a considerable achievement.’
Terry Theise

Ethos Priorat is a stunning visual journey through one of Spain’s most significant wine regions. It introduces not only a necessary understanding of the Priorat but, more importantly, a look at the people who have dedicated their lives to the soil, vine, and amazing wines produced here. This book deserves a place amongst the best books on wine.’
Rick Fisher, Wine Scholar Guild

Ethos Priorat is an experience, a journey into the life within the wines of the Priorat. Despite its isolation it has quickly become one of the most important wine regions in the world. The reasons for this are explained in three simple chapters: Nature, Spirit and Wine. Nature provides an in-depth look at the Priorat terroir as well as growth and sustainability. Spirit is the human part of the story recollecting history through the formation of the villages along with the people’s relationship with the vines through the seasons. The final chapter, Wine, is a sensory journey from vineyard to cellar as the fruit transforms into a Priorat wine. Experts in regional history, geology, viticulture and winemaking make it a definitive resource about the distinctions of this tiny wine region in Spain. Full-colour photographs flow throughout the story from beginning to end leaving a lasting, and comprehensive impression about the region and its wines. Perhaps through our love of wine, and the story of the Priorat, we will surrender to our senses and remember how important it is to take care of nature so nature can take care of us.

Elizabeth Hecker’s career as a brand designer for California wineries exposed her to the life within wine. Her first taste of a Priorat wine in 2003 revealed a glistening schist landscape. She went to the Priorat to see if her vision was real. What was waiting for her there was a distinctive wine heritage and a force of nature so powerful it changed the course of her life. She spent the next ten years meeting the people of the Priorat, young and old, whose lives have been defined by the vines for generations. Alone in the vineyards sensing the fractured pieces of ancient slate supporting her place on the Earth — this was the genesis of Ethos Priorat.
