Stephen Skelton MW has been involved in viticulture and winemaking since 1975. After studying and working in Germany, he returned to Great Britain in 1977 to establish the vineyards at Tenterden, Kent—now home to Chapel Down Wines, the country’s largest wine producer. He went on to make wine there for 22 consecutive vintages.

Today, Stephen works as a viticultural consultant, advising on the establishment of vineyards for both still and sparkling wine production. An award-winning author, he has written more than a dozen books, most focusing on the vineyards and wines of England and Wales. His latest publication, The Knight Who Invented Champagne, explores the development of glass bottles in the early seventeenth century and their role in the evolution of sparkling wine.

Stephen became a Master of Wine in 2003 and is also a Liveryman of the Vintners’ Company.
