A Mallorca Book to Whet Your Thirst and Wanderlust

Mallorca has long been known as a beautiful holiday island. But who would have thought in the mid-1980s that the favourite island of the Germans and the British would one day become a destination for wine lovers? A handful of wine producers and 500 hectares of more or less cultivated vineyards were scattered across the island, which had even supplied France with wine 100 years earlier. But then everything changed. The typical Mallorcan limestone and marl soils, some of which are rich in iron, were already in place. When pioneers such as Ferrer, Ribas, Miquel Gelabert, and, a little later, Anima Negra gained international recognition, oenologists and investors recognized the potential of the island's viticulture. Today, more than 100 bodegas cultivate over 3,000 hectares of vineyards, some of which produce wines that are appreciated all over the world and celebrated for their particularly subtle style.

No doubt about it: it was time for a serious, expertly researched, and photographed wine book about the island and the people who have dedicated themselves to Mallorcan wine, about their dreams, their ambitions, and the remarkable dynamism that has brought cosmopolitan glamour to this small island. A coincidence brought the three editors together—all experts in their field—and congenially complemented by graphic designer Julie Finkel, who has managed to present the text and images in an appealing and island-friendly way.

At the heart of this unique guide to Mallorca are the 55 wineries selected by the editorial team. The criteria: the biggest, the best, and the most interesting bodegas. Of course, Jürgen Mathäß's texts also include a detailed presentation of Mallorca as a wine island, with its history, its grape varieties, and its unusual terroir. The book dedicates a chapter to a specialty of the island, the island lovers, the immigrant oenologists, the entrepreneurs, and the wine-loving amateurs and their dreams.

Anyone not yet convinced of the beauty of the island will be inspired to travel by the photographs of Thilo Weimar, who has captured not only the people but also the villages and the landscape. For travelers to Mallorca, the book also offers tips on restaurants with particularly good wine lists, addresses of wine shops, and portraits of hotels that offer wine knowledge and enjoyment in a special way, with seminars, extensive wine cellars, and professional advice.

‘The books that taught me about wine were about places and people. It’s the history and stories about a wine that bring it to life and make it worth talking about.’

– Steven Spurrier
