In collaboration with Académie du Vin Library, award-winning writer and controversial Meininger’s International Devil’s Advocate columnist, Robert Joseph, is using AI technology to help publish a wine book like no other. It includes pen portraits written by him, and AI-generated images of over 200 imaginary people who represent every facet of the wine industry, from the drinkers, producers and sellers to opinion-formers, bottlers and bureaucrats.
The book is literally ‘dynamic’: QR codes on every page allow readers to see AI-generated video clips of these ‘personas’ that will change as the technology and the wine industry evolve. In other words, if you scan a code in a year or maybe even a week, you may get a different experience.
Joseph, former Sunday Telegraph columnist, creator of the International Wine Challenge, author of over 20 books, including the Complete Encylopedia of Wine, The Art of the Wine Label, French Wine and Bordeaux and its Wines, is also the man behind the best-selling le Grand Noir wines from Languedoc, and K’AVSHIRI from Georgia.
Explaining why he decided to write this book, his first in nearly 20 years, Joseph said ‘At a time when the wine industry is facing a wide range of challenges, I have become increasingly concerned by how so many of its members have become isolated in their own geographic or category bubbles. The Wine People is an attempt to encourage a more holistic view. Instead of simplistically saying “Gen Z in the US isn’t drinking wine” or “wine companies are getting too big” I wanted to look at all the different people who play a part in any bottle of wine existing and ending up on one person’s table rather than another.‘
